Episode 3: Cardassian Wars, Part 2
This past week has been the most trying of my life. Where do I even begin to recount what happened a day and a half after the Agrippa left? I guess it started when I was working on the satellite relay and detected an anomaly on the sensors. It appeared as if a jamming matrix was being deployed. I was able to get a message to Lt. Jamison just before we lost planetside communications. He ordered us all to the caves in the mountains. That's when I looked up and saw the Cardassians descending upon the planet. I tell idiot Bob to get to the shuttle as quickly as possible so that we can grab whatever supplies are in it and either head back to the building or get to the caves. Well, I can't really call him an idiot anymore, he's quite the capable soldier. We were surrounded by six enemies that were extremely menacing. The people inside the field office for the fusion generator helped provide cover fire while we got the shuttle online.
I won't ever forget what I did then. I try to pretend that it didn't affect me greatly but, I've never directly taken a life before. I wasn't on a ship where someone had died or that had fired upon a vessel with living beings aboard. I wasn't on a mission where a security officer killed someone in the line of duty. It was me that fired the ship's phasers and killed to Cardassians. It was me. I.. I don't know how I feel about that. When we finally made it back to the Agrippa, I found my favorite emotional support humans and made them take the pain away. But I digress.
We cleared the area of Cardassians and got everyone out of the fusion reactor building. There wasn't much room, but we managed to get everyone with us safely to the caves. On our way back, I saw Kamal'Ha fording a group of colonists across the river towards the caves. They were being attacked by Cardassians and I took scans of their ship. We could take a few hits from them but not much. The colonists could take fewer hits so, with Bob and Lt. Jamison we drew them away and became pesky little earth vampire bugs until they crashed.
After we forced the Cardassian ship to crash, we headed up to the ionosphere to get clear of the communications jamming and we sent out a distress signal. Before we could get a response, however, a larger Cardassian cruiser showed up. It wasn't much stronger than the other vessel we brought down. But our systems were a bit damaged and another Cardassian ship similar to the one we took down as also on the way. I decided that we should draw their attention away from the colonists and head into the cliff areas with heavy mineral deposits.
Our tactics provided time to repair the shuttle and hide out for a couple of days while the enemy wasted resources looking for us.
Three days later, we got a distress signal from Kamal'Ha at the cave network. Instead of responding, we returned to the cave network as quickly and quietly as we could. We took out some of the ground forces in a surprise attack and danced around the smaller vessel that had been chasing us a couple of days prior.
I was able to make a few modifications to our weapons systems to increase damage output at the cost of a bit of ops efficiency. I regret that it had to come to that. I really do. There was so much chaos. So much death. But we saved as many people as possible and while we harassed one of the Cardassian vessels, the Cairo arrived and allowed us to rescue everyone at the caves. The rest of the planet, however, had fallen to Cardassian control.
Shortly after everyone was transported to the ship, we provided Cairo's XO, Samantha Banks, a full debrief. I rambled a bit, but my account was accurate and I handed her the log I made for my official report. I stuck strictly to the facts. I may need to update the report with the information I gained in hindsight, but for now, I consider it complete.
Last night, I sought out Okoye and she helped me through the trauma I'm going through. We did more snuggling than sex tonight. I really just needed someone to lean on. I've lived through.. I.. I think that's all I going to log for tonight.
