Episode 1: Academic Aptitude

— Begin Entry

We began in a training exercise in a wooded area. Byron decided to do what he normally does and brings his fists to a phaser fight. For someone with Vulcan blood, he acts very rashly. Almost as if he’s out to disprove stereotypes from the ground up. Somehow his crazy stunt works and he distracts the Alpha team long enough for Kamal’Ha to convince one of our opponents to not fire. But it kind of backfired and the cadet used an illegal setting and got disqualified with extreme prejudice. I didn’t know it at the time, but it was all part of our test. I’m not truly convinced. Playing such psychological games on the students seems to be a bad idea to me. I mean how do they expect us to react when someone so obviously cheats?

After the training exercise, we met with Captain Meryll Flint. She’s very nice. I think she might be evil. But then I think all nice people are evil. She gave us a strange ‘At a boy’ speech in preparation for next week’s exams. We’re third years, yes we’re the best in our class, but it makes me a little uncomfortable that she’s paying so much attention.

So I should probably bring up Saval. For some reason that Vulcan can stand neither Byron nor me. I can see why he doesn’t like Byron. I think he’s kind of racist. He might not like me because I corrected him on a logic error he made during my first year and made him look silly. Or possibly the time that he walked in on Ramonda, Okoye, Adam, and I practicing gymnastics.

After the training exercise, we received a visit from the commandant herself, Vice Admiral Karen Pentagrast. She’s not only a board member but also a joint chief. Odan says I should be very diplomatic when I speak with her. I’m not sure why he’s worried. I think she was involved in the Kitimir accords and she was a fighting Captain vs the other types of captains. She even helped deal with some rogue Klingons.

Byon’s yelling at me to put away my journal so that’s all for now.
